REC 3: Genesis

As a huge fan of the first two [REC] films, I am both eagerly anticipating and slightly dreading watching REC 3: Genesis, mostly because the "Genesis" prefix has me a little bit worried, and early rumours that it doesn't quite live up to the greatness of the first two films.

For those of you not familiar with the first two films, they are Spanish found footage horror films that were absolutely fantastic. The third film, a parallel sequel to the first two, was released earlier this year in Spain and is almost set for an international release.

Take a look at all three trailers below in sequence. Consider it an education.

Cult Classic #1 - Robocop

I decided to start my quest with Paul Verhoeven's Robocop. Let me just start by saying, I think Verhoeven is a bit of a visionary. He manages to blend violence and a hit of camp with characters that you actually care about, though for the life of me I am not sure why.

The same goes for Robocop. When the ending credits rolled, I coudln't help but smile as Murphy walked away triumphantly from the OCP boardroom. Somewhere inbetween Murphy being blown to pieces, reassembled as a crime-fighting cyborg and loads of violence, Verhoeven just likes to to remind is that while Robocop is half machine, his spirit will never be broken. Cheesy, but surprisingly endearing.

This all comes as quite a surprise, especially in a movie that oozes sleaze as deliciously as Robocop. From the get-go, slightly "futuristic" Detroit seems quite believable as a city where crime is out of control, and I found myself wondering the plot for 8 Mile was taking place off-camera somewhere.

I have to say, Kurtwood "Red" Smith stole the show as Clarence Boddicker, the film's main protagonist. Sadistic and strangely charismatic, he chews up and spits out his dialogue with such enthusiasm that it takes the film to a whole new level.

I was slightly disappointed with the ED-209, I hoped it would be a tad more formidable but judging by how terribly it was animated, a decision must have been made to cut down on its screen time.

As I stated earlier, I enjoyed Robocop more than I thought I would. I was expecting a 80's violence-fest and while I wasn't disappointed, Verhoeven crafted a cult classic with inspired casting, sufficient amounts of violence and an unexpected amount of charisma.

One question remains: Seeing as Robocop eats baby food, does he also poop? Some questions might never be answered.

Cult-o-meter: 5/10 - Great film, doesn't take itself too seriously but still manages to wag a finger at media and corporations.

The Cult Classic Film Adventure 2012

I've recently become slightly disillusioned with not only most new film releases, but my own collection as well, which is something that I want to rectify.

I love films, and I especially love those that people talk about years after they've been watched. So, I decided to embark on a grand adventure to explore not only the films that I love but haven't seen for a long time, but also the cult classic films that I've always wanted to watch but I've not gotten around to.

I asked on the forums for a few suggestions, and you should be able to find my entire list on there as well. Oh, did I mention I will post a little something after every one that I watch?

Can't wait!

A Nolan Bond? Hell yes!

I find it quite it surprising that the internet is not more abuzz with the latest news from Christopher "Take All My Money Now" Nolan, but Batman news is most likely smothering any other delicious bit of news and speculation about the writer / director's future. This article has me really excited, though.

According to Empire magazine, Nolan has always been a Bond fan and would like to take a shot at a 007 film somewhere in the future. Now, this is obviously something that might never pan out but I can only imagine what someone like " Please Write All Future Scripts Of All Movies Ever" Nolan could do with another well-established franchise.

Inception meets Casino Royale? Take all my money now! (See?)

Suicide Girls Must Die!

Now, I'm not a 100% sure that I'm on board with that sentiment. However, someone seems to be keen on the idea as one by one, these twelve suicide girls (I think I had a dream that involved 12 SG's once) start disappearing from the cabin where they are shooting a calendar video.

I don't know about you, but Suicide Girls in a cabin in the woods seems like a sure fire way to steal the top gold from Mr. Cameron and his blue kittehs. These girls can REALLY act. Promise. I saw a video once.

The Runaways

I hate the Twilight series. So, so much. I hate the way it ruins vampires, I hate the way it blatantly waves it in our faces that it is nothing more than a shameful pop-culture cash-in masquerading as fiction. I also hate the way it ruins Kristen Stewart.

She has proven herself a good actress with her pre-Twilight films, but now I can't hear her name without thinking about sparkly vampires and self-obsessed teenagers. Then I saw the trailer for The Runaways, which I will be calling The Possible Redemption of Miss Stewart. It looks fantastic.

The Runaways deals with the famous all-girl rock band of the same name from the 70's that performed alongside the likes of The Ramones, the Sex Pistols and Blondie.

Kristen Stewart plays Jett and Dakota Fanning, who is all grown up, stars as Currie.

I'm holding my fingers crossed for this one. Empire Records and Almost Famous are two of my favourite movies of all time, and I am hoping that this at least compares to the brilliance of these two. Only time will tell, so the best we can do now is take a look at the trailer:

Oh, and for interest's sake, here is what The Runaways really looked like. Hmmm...70's babes.

Another Kick-Ass trailer kicks ass!

So, the first proper Kick-Ass trailer (besides the really cool Hit Girl red band trailer) has been released today and it actually gives you an idea what the movie is about.

So, we have a 12-year old girl shooting some people, a guy in a goofy green costume beating some guys up with batons and then there is the Red Mist (aka McLovin') driving around in a suspiciously expensive sports car.

All I know is, I can't wait...this movie is going to [insert appropriate adjective] [insert appropriate body part].

Believe that.

The Crazies - Trailer

So, in December I posted about Eisner's remake, The Crazies, which I am very excited about. I doubt it'll win any Oscars but it looks like a coffins full of fun. Haha, yeah, I made a funny. I apologise. Now watch the trailer:

Eisner's The Crazies - new poster!

How awesome does that look?

I am REALLY looking forward to this movie. Firstly, the original was made by George Romero who pretty much single-handedly invented the zombie movie genre. Think the original Day of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Land of the Dead. As you can imagine, he is quite fond of making loads of people die really badly. I do approve of this behaviour (cinematically, of course...*cough*) so I hope that Breck Eisner is up for the task at hand. Eisner made Sahara, and that was...okay. He does have some horror experience under his belt, like the pilot episode of Fear Itself which I really enjoyed.

That said, The Crazies sounds pretty cool and Tim Olyphant is in it, who is probably my favourite actor. Yeah yeah, Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor in the world but he is also the one actor in the world that loves making movies that nobody really wants to watch. Deal with it.

Anyway, back to The Crazies. The premise is quite simple. Some convenient plot twist poisons a small town's water supply and it makes them all go batshit crazy. When I say batshit crazy, I mean murderdeathkill homicidal maniac crazy...and that's just peachy.

Luckily Timmyboy is the sheriff in town, but also moonlights as the pimp from Girl Next Door and a Hitman so he should definitely be hardcore enough to make it out alive and protect some village hottie from dying. Luckily, the village hottie turns out to be Danielle Panabaker and she survived Jason in Friday the 13th so she seems qualified.

Check out the two other official movie posters below. Yeah, its awesome. Nothing screams desperation likes blood on a road sign.

Kick-Ass: Hit Girl Red-Band Trailer

I am really looking forward to the upcoming movie Kick-Ass, based on the graphic novel of the same name.

It follows the adventures of a few kids (and Nicholas Cage) who dream of being superheroes, so they run around in masks beating up bad guys.

The main hero is appropriately called "Kick-Ass", who teams up with a disturbingly violent 12-year old girl who calls herself "Hit Girl". I wonder if they asked her ID at Walmart when she decided that firearms is a good idea?

That all said, take a look at the teaser trailer for Hit Girl's character. This girl needs some better role-models. Believe.

Daybreakers Trailer

Here is the trailer for the upcoming movie "Daybreakers" which suspiciously looks like Gattaca. Hey look, its Ethan Hawke again! You know things are going to blow up when he is around, but slowly and dramatically.

Yeah, believe that.

In any case, hopefully this can salvage some dignity for the poor vampire nation after they were molested by the Twilight "saga". Saga. Yeah, they have the nerve to call it a "saga" where they actually mean "tea party".

Here's hoping.

Brittany Murphy 1977-2009

One of my favourite actresses passed away last (Sunday) night. I am incredibly sad face about this, very few actresses could bring so much energy and fun to the roles they play. That, and I think she was remarkably attractive, her on-screen personality having a lot to do with it as well...not that she needed the help!

She first appeared in Clueless as "Tai", but most people will remember her for movies like Don't Say A Word, 8 Mile and Sin City.

She also tried her hand at music and recorded a number with Paul Oakenfold, and who can forget her vocal performance in Happy Feet?

The silver screen now just seems a little less bright, don't you think?
